Jaguar Cichlid and Dovii sex id
« on: January 16, 2005, 09:32:55 PM »
I have a Jaguar Cichlid who has a round dorsal fin, but is still small(about an inch). I read that the males have a more pointed dorsal fin, but don't know if it mean when an adult. I also read from the same book that the male Dovii Cichlid is supposed to about 20cm larger than female, and I know they're talking about when adult. My small Dovii also has a round dorsal fin or top fin. How could you sex them for sure?

I wouldnt go by the fin shapes on either fish.

The jag may have to be a reasonable size to tell for sure

jag

Sexing- Males get much larger and have a more elaborate color pattern. While females are not nearly as large and usualy only have one broken lateral stripe.

Dovii
Quote
Dovii's are relatively easy to sex once they reach maturity, with females developing a more yellowish background colour as opposed to the silvery background of a male. Males will also develop impressive nuchal humps as they grow.

I also have another question about my Jaguar. I've had him for a long time(can't say) and doesn't seem to have grown that quickly. Now I also got that Dovii I was talking about, and was smaller then the Jag. About a month and a half later, it outgrew the Jag. I read somewhere that Jaguar Cichlid grow to six inches quick. What's the problem? Oh yeah, and about the coloring of the Dovii between male/female sex, how can I tell what type of coloring, because my Dovii has a pale coloring, then at some points has it's full coloring which is dark-black stripes and spots on his/her body. ??? From what I've noticed it seems females are usually the only that show full  black stripes
I've had a fish or two

Colorful =yes
more stripped = no

Young pair
Hard to see but the back colorful fish is a male - stripe is broken up
Front fish with the solid bright stripe is a female

older male - notice with age the stripe  fades more and more
I've had a fish or two

The only thing I don't get is that the stripes go away too.I know you're talking about that they go away permenently when grown, but I think it also has something to do with the fish's stress.Yeah though, I have a female. Thanks  Oh yeah, mine also seems to have little green freckles on its face. Does that mean anything? O0

Well compared to the two prior pics, it definitely looks female.

It's too small to sex by its color patterns and fin shape. :) I had a jag that grew an average of 1.25" a month and all I fed it were tetramin mini cichlid pellets and guppies. You don't have long to wait. Be patient. ><: >::: O0
