black and white catfish(I think) what was it
« on: February 01, 2005, 09:54:41 AM »
20 years ago I had my first and only tank (getting a new 1 soon) and went to a fish show in Glasgow where I bought a small catfish, it was about 2" long shaped a bit like a plec flat fattish body narrow tail pure black except for a single white line from behind gill plate through the tail centre, it had 3 pikes on white line just behind dorsal fin area.
I have been in aquarium store since and never seen 1. body was hard as oscar used to pick him up and take him for a swim down tank before letting it go.
just wondering what it could have been.   ???

Tracey would probably know best but I wanted to see if I could guess ... A Raphael catfish perhaps?  :)

Do an internet search and look for Zebra Pleco, maybe this is what you are looking for? ???

Sounds maybe like a Raphael of some kind  ???  Anything like this one, Gerry?

I'd suspect a rapheal cat as well.  There are striped and spotted versions out there.  I seem to recall the striped ones having more then one stripe but its been a while since I saw one and I could be mistaken.

My Raphael has more than one white stripe (platydoras costatus), but the one in the links that I posted (acanthodoras cataphractus) only seems to have the one.  Its dark brown, rather than black, but it was the closest I could think of  :-\

looked a bit like the one in  the1st link but was pure black with a very pronounced white stripe, definitely had the square shaped mouth of a catfish so I don't think it was a member of the plecs.
Cant remember if it had barbels, whiskers or not,,,,mmmmmm so long ago  ???
as I said never seen it over here again so this is just newfound curiosity now that I'm coming back to the hobby O0

;D :D Thanks to being guided in the right direction I have found out what it was, Platydoras Costatus (striped raphael) and it does have a second short stripe running down pectoral fins.
well I cant remember everything over 20 years, :-\.  I'll need to see if I can track one down.

ohh!!!! what a clever bunch you are O0.
you can see one on this site

That is a nice looking catfish.  I wouldnt mind having one of those, although I have a preference for the zebra pleco, but any black and white fish is striking.  I hope you are able to find one and be reaquainted after all these years!

Lol, I was almost spot-on Gerry, I actually thought it might have been the acanthodorus, not the platydoras..... but glad to have pointed you in the right direction  ;D  I just hope you get a better tempered one that I have....... man, is she mean!!!!  :o

Guess they must be like some of our cichlid boys with their own temperament, cos the one I had was no problem aggression wise and used to swim about even when the light was on.
Maybe I was just real lucky
