How to prevent my baby red devils from being so scared ?
« on: February 23, 2005, 09:00:51 PM »
Well i have about 30 baby red devils. When i do any sudden movement, the baby scattered like fly. Well i bought some mean baby fry from the internet by Jeff Rapps and when i flick my hand or try to scared them. They wouldn't move an inch. I leave my light on all day. Is that why they get so scared or because i had the parents in the tank for a while but i took them out and let my cousin borrowed it so they could breed in his tank. If it is then can i do anything to stop them from being scared now.Well i need your guys help on this subject. I know mostly everything about central cichlid but this confuses me.

how big is the fry now? it's normal to expect them to be skittish as fry and sudden movements will scare most fish in general.

i definately wouldn't reintroduce the parents, now they've been seperated they will now see them as just other fish (possibly food) and no longer recognise them as their own offspring.

Sounds like normal fry behaviour to me.  They seem to go thru a real curious phase when they're still quite small, then I think it dawns on them that there are bad things out there that are out to get them and they go all spooky and silly  ::)  I had the same thing with some Electric Yellow fry.  They were really curious and would come charging up to the front of the tank til they reached about 3/4 of an inch, after that they spend most of their time hiding and having hysterics whenever I went near them.  They should grow out of it as they get a little older and more able to defend themselves  O0  Give them plenty of places to hide in, that shoudl help them feel a little more secure.
