new tank purchase
« on: March 14, 2005, 09:59:13 AM »
I am currently in the market for another central american tank to go along with the collection of others. I have room for a tank no more than four foot long. I am looking to house a pair of something like red devils, trimac, midas or something about that size.I know these fish establish their territories horizontally and not so much vertically,I was looking at possibly a 75 or 90g tank since the footprint is the same.Logically the 90 would be the best bet for a pair of fish, but how much difference would that 4 extra inches of height over a 75g make.I'm even thinking real hard about a 120g.what experience do you guys have with a 75 or 90 ( I think I know the answer, but would like some "expert" input)  thanks

4" taller isn't going to make a big difference with the fish you want to keep. If you can, go for the 48x24x24 120gal.

Let us gather round and cheer her
Chant her glory Oregon
Roar the praises of her warriors
Sing the story Oregon
On to victory urge the heroes
Of our mighty Oregon!

I'd agree that the 4 inches in height won't make a difference in terms of aggression but the extra 15 gallons will help with water quality.  With the fish you want go for the largest tank you can get.  I'd go with the 120 myself

1 EBJD (Cichlasoma Octofasciatum)
1 Salvini Cichlid (Cichlasoma/Nandopsis Salvini)
1 Royal Pleco (Panaque Nigrolineatus)
4 Clown Loaches (Chromobotia Macracanthus)
6 Bleheri Rainbowfish (Chilatherina bleheri)
8 Boesmani Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia Boesemani)

Go with the 120, you'll never regret the extra space  O0  The fish you're looking at can be pretty aggresive, especially if they spawn, and you may need all the space you can get to get them to tolerate each other.  It also means that if you do have severe aggression problems, you can divide the tank and still let each fish have 60 gallons.

if you have the room to handle the width then go with 4' x 2' x 2' like CK recommended.

i have a mate with a tank those specs and allthough he's keeping africans it looks an ideal size for a pair of large americans (tryed to convince him of that myself when he bought his but they're a stubbon breed those african nuts  :-\).
