Golden pleco
« on: March 23, 2005, 04:18:34 AM »
I bought a 3" "golden plec" today, or so I am lead to believe from fish store.

I have tried to search for info on this but can't find any,,found gold nugget, goldie, gold stripe but none look like mine :-\

he is pure gold no spots or stripes.. lfs says it grows to 7" - 8" (do not trust lfs's) but on reading pleco stuff in catfish topics I am beginning to wonder as to final size.

Anyone help me with info on this plec.   O0

Sorry, i've never actually heard of an all gold pleco, nor have i seen one.  Generally speaking the really big plecos are along the common lines and it seems that many of the more exotic ones max out at 18" or smaller.  Still pretty big but only about 1/2 the size of a full grown common.  I would guess it's somehow related to the gold nuggets or gold strips you were looking at so it may be a safe bet to assume he'll get as big as they get.  I hope this helps.

1 EBJD (Cichlasoma Octofasciatum)
1 Salvini Cichlid (Cichlasoma/Nandopsis Salvini)
1 Royal Pleco (Panaque Nigrolineatus)
Several cory cats
1 Syndontis Catfish
numerous Giant Danio's
1 Boesmani Rainbowfish

maybe it is like a golden clown knife (albino) it could just be semi albino and the name that the lfs made up is gold pleco.  just a thought  :)

it's not albino,,has some colour and the eyes are dark (i hate them pink alb eyes).

certain ways he/she moves in the light there is a very light brown colourization shows through.

I think its a wee cracker,on the glass, stones and wood, just want to know if I could have problems with size later on.

Its an albino alright.  Not sure what species, but definitley an albino.  Could be Hypostomus punctatus (Common Pleco) or maybe Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps (Sailfin Pleco), I know albino Gibby's are relatively common.  He looks a lot like mine did when he was smaller, and he seems to have stopped growing at around 11".  Here's a really crappy pic of him

Lol, Eric, I think the spots you're referring to are on my very dirty glass, not on the pleco  :-X  He doesn't have any spots

He does not have the pink eyes of a true albino (cos I hate them) in which case I will keep him, he/she is a very busy little fish as it never stops for long.

In the pic you posted, his eyes look pretty red, Gerry  :-\  His behaviour sounds just like mine as well, crazy like he's on speed or something  ::)

my pictus act more like its on speed swims up and down in the corner all day, ,the pleco eyes are quite dark in real life,,might have been the flash from the camera (red eye)

still I was more worried about size and if he grows to 11"  I can live with that and the fact he swims most of the time is a huge bonus as most plecs i've seen are lying still on the bottom or just stuck like glue to the glass.
