If you are really keen on having a JD in there, then I'd suggest going with just a single Convict.  If you ended up with a pair and they spawned, your JD could get severely beaten  :(  Mating Convicts are a force to be reckoned with and I have heard of them killing full-grown Oscar's in defense of their territory and fry.  A single would keep your tank much more peaceful.

I agree with Z-S as female cons are more tolerant of tank mates

1 male JD
1 female Con (I think they look nicer than males)

Ummm you realize those two can interbreed right? hehehe might be better off with a male con in this particular instance ;)

Good point, JC, I forgot about your little "monster"  ;)  A male of each species would be the best way to go to prevent crossbreeding, although that raises problems with aggression......... you could be in for a little mix and match to get two fish that will live together  :-\

1 female jd
1 female con
1 pleco

I'd go with this one.  2 Females are alot easier to mix and match than 2 males.

That might be tougher than it sounds unless you buy a more mature JD to positively identify a female.  I know it's possible to sex cons at a young age but JD's are a bit tougher.  You can tell with some certainty once they've hit 4" or so with the larger they are the easier it is to sex them.  Good luck.

1 EBJD (Cichlasoma Octofasciatum)
1 Salvini Cichlid (Cichlasoma/Nandopsis Salvini)
1 Royal Pleco (Panaque Nigrolineatus)
4 Clown Loaches (Chromobotia Macracanthus)
6 Bleheri Rainbowfish (Chilatherina bleheri)
8 Boesmani Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia Boesemani)

Pink or black con?
This is getting expensive! I think I\\\'m gonna need a 2nd job to support my fish habit.

Pink or black con?

Either or. THey both show the red belly (or apricot-ish in the case of the pink). And both variations will show the rainbow effect in the dorsal fin as well as  the redish ventral scales.

i totally disagree with the above comments.. while some convicts can put up a fight i think the majority of them know their role when being attacked by a bigger fish and put in its place. from past experiences i had a jd  and mating con pair and a plec all in the same 29 gall. the tank was split in two with minor scuffles of showing thier teeth(jd 5in, male con about same4in, female2.5in). but mostly minded there business. the cons matted about 6 times till i got sick of the spawn and gave them away. so i see no reason why a jd and con pair shouldnt get along in a 55 gal.

ps that must have been a sick oscar to be taken down by a convict my theory is that cons can tolerate much lower water levels than oscars and the oscar had a huge disadvantage

they looking at it in the long run by the time the jd gets 2 its max size and the cons get to their max size the agression levels of both these fish would increase . i had a pair of cons about 4" both the male and the female and they did put the perfectly healthy oscar in its  place. its just that the need to protect there territory and fry jst over comes their fear of that bigger fish. and it also depends abit on the fish them selves i had a smaller pair of cons that let the pleco come all the way up to their cave before chasing it away.

...Its intensions like its motions are blur .....
