4 convicts
« on: May 17, 2005, 03:41:39 PM »
I currently have a male and female convict in a 55 gallon but they have not breeded yet but are always together and in the same cave. Do you think I could enter another male and female. Or would the other convicts go after them?

it's hard to predict how your particular pair will be, but in theory it would be ok provided they had their own territorys (spawn sites, caves etc.). you could have problems once one pair is spawning and the other is not however in my opinion.

I totally agree with Fnser on this one. I think there is more risks than not, if adding a new pair, because the older pair is already established. If you do, then I would rearrange the tank a little, to make things a little more even for the new guys.

Well, there's a chance that you might get trouble once one pair pairs off and decides to multiply. That will attract unwanted attention from the other two, but given enough space and territory, they should (and I mean should-not guarantee) stick to facing each other off and going back to thier respective corners.

The female will have a red belly once she is about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches.  The male will have a slight hump on the head.  I started with 2 pr of convicts about 3 weeks ago, and put them in a 55 gal, and 1 now have 2 separate groups of fry swimming around.  You want to have a place for the cons to lay their eggs, and it sound like you already have that.  Just need to ensure you have a male and female.  I don't think their would be a big issue with introducing another pair, but I wouldn't wait much longer.....In my tank, one pair owns one end, and the other pair owns the other.  Another good item to use is a 6 inch clay garden pot, you can pick one up at a garden center for under 2 dollars usually, just rinse it out, before you put it in the tank...If you have any questions, feel free to send me a note, I just went thru, what your going thru
