Please Help. Need id for a couple mystery cichlids.
« on: June 01, 2005, 07:05:46 AM »
Both of these came from the ubiquitous "assorted african cichlid" tank
Top one's fins are folded in the pic, but they have a decidedly bluish cast, and the egg spots are yellow rimmed with black.  I know nothing about this one at all.
Bottom one is very small still, about 1.5 inches.  I think it is something commondly called "cobalt blue" but not sure, and I don't know the actual name.  The color in the picture came out abit dark, he is somewhat lighter, closer to sky blue.
Any help would be appreciated

I cant help you with id but i have a question. The one in the fist pick he has a blue color almost dust like on his fins. Is that normal i have 4 cichlids that all have that on fins and body. Sorry for post hijack.

Well normal is as normal does I think.
If you have 4 like that, plus now you've seen mine, probably it's not something out of the ordinary.  Mine doesn't seem like he is sick, and the egg spots on the anal fin are nice and bright, so I don't think it is a symptom of anything.
When I look closely at mine, it seems like the blue is not just on the fins, the scales are actually blue also, but they are translucent, and in this case, I think the pink is in fact his flesh showing though or the color of the skin itself.  I would guess that if the scales were translucent due to some sort of mineral deficiency, it would have corrected itself in my tank by now, unless it is a genetic deficiency like albinism.

Thanks for the ID.
I was already thinking the top one might be a zebra after looking at taxonomy web sites and he sure acts like it.
Is there any way to find out if it's a natural morph or mutation (maybe even a new mutation)?
Anyone out there with another one of these salmon colored zebras?

What kind of food were you giving before and after?
I am not sure that this would be the case with mine because I have another zebra in the tank and he's quite orange.  I've had the salmon one for about a month already and he hasn't changed at all.

I was feeding a generic food that the apartment manager bought, I think Wardley was the brand.  Now I am trying New Life Spectrum, and the fish really seem to like it a lot more. Especially my socolofi.

nice color on that one!
I give mine frozen brine shrimp already, and I frequently feed them blanched leafy vegies.  They seems to enjoy that :)
I haven't been able to find good flakes though.  Where is this kind sold?  I don't think I've seen it.

Its called New Life Spectrum Cichlid Formula... Its in a pellet form and it sinks... My fish love it and as you can see for my picture it works... I feed Spectrum twice a day, and every so often I'll feed brine shrimp (frozen) Thats it... I dont feed veggie because there is enough alge growing in my tank for them to munch on... lol... But that Spectrum even garentees that your fish will color up and it works...
