the corner tank will give it more swimming room but less distance swimming room.

more surface area.

for a foot long fish id be looking at longer tank then taller. The LFS by me that has 12" O's has them in a 1k gallon pond and they do just fine(indoor pond) but a foot long fish is huge man. best thing to do is take a tape measure, set it at exactly the length of the fish(measure him too, you can lip him just be careful, its jaw is as fragile as a bluegills not as strong as a bass) then test his length on the tape inside the tank he is giving you. go at different angles and such.

decor is gonna be a minimum, and I dont think you will have any other fish in the tank with him.

is it a pentagon corner or a euro corner tank?  euro would be much much better because the angles are curves and add a little more room inside then a angles corner hex/pentagon tank does.

gallon wise 65 is ok but as stated above  how much room will it actually give the O to swim about in ?  , is the tank bow fronted ie like a quarter circle ?

Longer is always better than higher, although O's will use all levels. Just try to imagine a fish that large in the tank, or like said measure it up. Does he have room to turn with space to spare? Could he go flat out speed without smacking into glass with in a second?  Smiley

If you think about it long and hard enough you will find a way to even it up so you can get the tank, sometime she did something that deserves an unspoken payback.

i forgot another lfs way south of me has an O tank, its literally like maybe 15" deep but its 4' front to back and about 8' long.

You say "hey sweet heart I'm getting this great new tank that's on sale for a great price, but before you congratulate me on such a fantastic find, the best bit is the money that I've saved on buying this tank means that I can take you out for dinner!" Worth a shot.  Smiley Well done. And GOOD LUCK!
